Towards #WeGovernment: Collective and participative approaches for addressing local policy challenges

The WeGovNow project has developed and piloted a new type of civic engagement platform that supports communication and collaboration between citizens, civil society and public administrations.

By involving citizens as partners in the delivery of public services and as active agents for and of their community, the WeGovNow platform helps addressing local policy challenges in a participatory manner.

The WeGovNow platform

In contrast to commonly available civic participation online tools such as citizen surveys or petition systems, WeGovNow represents an integrated “tool box” which enables co-creating responses to local policy challenges by the public administration, the citizens, the civil society and local businesses.

WeGovNow Public Pilots

During the final project year, the pilot platform has been operated under day-to-day conditions by the City of Turin, the London Borough of Southwark and San Donà dí Piave, a rather rural municipality near Venice. Each pilot implementation was directed towards addressing local policy challenges that had emerged prior to the WeGovNow project.

What we have learned

WeGovNow has proven suitable to support civic participation processes that triggered mass utilisation with thousands of users. At the same time, WeGovNow was utilised to accommodate creative stakeholder interactions which would otherwise typically have been achievable only in on-site engagement settings.
