San DonĂ  and WeGovNow receive Italian Innovation Prize

October 26 was a day to celebrate. Our project partner San Donà di Piave has been honoured with the National Innovation Prize SMAU 2017 for its outstanding implementation of smart city development projects fostering participatory community management and urban regeneration in the municipality. The prize has been awarded in the category ‘Smart Communities’ and highlights San Donà’s participation in two pathbreaking European projects with WeGovNow being one driver behind this success story.

San Donà’s current social strategy seeks to create a new idea of the city that engages its citizens, civil society organisations and regional businesses as active agents of their community. In particular, it is the revitalisation of the historic city centre which is it at the heart of the municipality’s urban development plans. WeGovNow will play a crucial role in the establishment of a collaborative dialogue between local authorities and its residents that is accompanied by a new functional culture of relationships and sense of community. Moreover, the platform is envisaged to increase the involvement of citizens in the decision making processes on the revitalisation of this historic part of San Donà and thus to make the city centre more attractive for different local actors. As such San Donà di Piave’s involvement in the WeGovNow project cannot be considered as an isolated approach but as effectively supplementing the local regeneration policies and initiatives pursued by the municipality. The public piloting of the WeGovNow engagement platform in San Donà will start in early 2018.  Then open to all local residents, the platform will be tested in tailored use cases developed in an earlier project phase.

According to the SMAU Innovation Prize website (content in Italian), San Donà’s participation in these two important European projects, WeGovNow and CityCentreDoctor, along with the city’s large-scale strategic vision, places the municipality among the best international practices and as a paragon of inclusive and participatory community planning. The prize has been awarded during the SMAU 2017 innovation fair in Milan, an annual three-day event gathering Italy’s key protagonists active in the provision of innovative services to citizens and businesses. A recording of the SMAU Live Show on Smart Communities and Cities featuring Daniele Terzariol, city councillor and delegate to the European projects of the municipality of San Donà di Piave, can be watched here (content in Italian).
